Bergeron records hat trick, Fillies remain perfect at home
TIFTON- ABAC continued their perfect mark at home this past Sunday afternoon against the Lady Highlanders by the score of 5-1. The magic number of goals in the last two games was five, and now the win total at home is now five total for the Fillies Soccer team. Through five home games, the ladies have scored 16 of their 28 goals at home which is the same as the season total a season ago.
The offensive-mind of this year hasn't been a surprise to many as Blakeley Bergeron has had the golden-foot leading all Fillies scorers with 10 goals. With Bergeron leading the attack offensively, you add players like Breanna Gomez, Myesha Robinson, Katy Hunt, and Starr Robertson around her and that has seemed to be a great formulation for the Fillies team to score goals.
Bergeron is tied atop the conference in goals, but Gomez is sitting at just two behind with eight total followed by Hunt with four goals, Robertson, and Robinson with two apiece. Miranda Young and Lexi Lloyd has also found the net once as well.
"Soccer is a team sport. One of my teammates has assisted me on every one of those goals. It is exciting to be the leading scorer, but it is more exciting to be part of a team that has only one loss. It is also rewarding to be a member of a team that is getting better everyday. It seems we are peaking at the right time and our hard work is paying off." Bergeron stated in regards to her ten goals scored.
For Fillies fans as well as the players and coaches playing at home has been a treat for everyone this year and their continued dominance at home has continued to show.
Sunday afternoon was another great performance for the team. The home team made the most of their opportunities as four of their seven first half shots found the goal. Gomez added the first two goals on the scoreboard, with two nice assists off the foot of Young. Bergeron secured the last two goals before intermission, with one assist by Hunt and the other by Robertson. From goal to goal, the Fillies scores came within minutes of each other.
Young mentioned after the game, "We really connected as a team. We communicated and worked really well off the ball. I am really proud of how the team played and hope we get another great outcome against Andrew".
Although ABAC was outshot by one in the first half, Taylor Sorrows and the defense made some great stops and kept the Lady Highlanders off the board.
The offensive attack continued for the Fillies as shots continued at the goal, Bergeron added her third goal, and the hat trick in the 60th minute.
Gordon State finally found the net at the 80:24 mark. Taylor Broughton recorded her first goal on the year, which was assisted byAlyssia Lowers.
For the Fillies team, the depth of the bench has been a great strength for the team. It has allowed the team to stay fresh throughout the course of the game with the rotation of all players. Players which include Carly Altman, Taylor Gillmore, Courtney Moore, Raven Rapier, Cassidy Ingram, Mary Beth Holec, and Lauren Lee have all come off the bench and done quality things on the field.
Scout Hogan had this to say about game against Gordon, "We played really hard and we've been working hard all week and I think the score really showed that. Our whole team played great and hopefully we can carry this momentum with us for the rest of the season".
With just four games remaining for the Fillies, ABAC is in the second spot amongst conference opponents, with their only blemish on their record which is against Darton. Last night they played on the road against Andrew College. In their previous game against Andrew, ABAC fell behind 1-0 early in the game, but continued to fight as they took a 2-1 lead at the half. Andrew College would eventually tie the score at two apiece, but a goal scored by Blakeley Bergeron in the 74th minute of play slid by the visitors by the score of 3-2.
