BARNESVILLE, Ga. – The GCAA women's soccer championship featured the top two seeds as second seed Georgia Military traveled to Gordon State this past Saturday to face the top seeded Highlanders for the GCAA title. GMC score two goals in the first half and two in the second to defeat Gordon by a score of 4-2.
In getting to the title game GMC first had to defeat reigning GCAA champion South Georgia State last week 1-0 to advance to play in the title match. Top seed Gordon defeated fourth seed Southern Union also by a score of 1-0 to advance.
And this year's soccer championship added an additional twist in that both teams regardless of the outcome will advance to the NJCAA Southeast District tournament to be played in Milledgeville on the Georgia College Bobcats west campus field.
The conference final served as a showdown between the top two teams in which only one goal by Gordon was the difference during their regular season series as the Highlanders won one game and they tied the other match.
GMC tallied the first score at the 12 minute mark on a goal by Lesly Ortega to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage. GSC later tied the game at 1-1. GMC once again took the lead on a goal by Dani Henriquez at the 37th minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-1. Four minutes into the second half Drew Williams scored giving the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. Dani Henriquez added her second goal with 9 minutes left in the game to give GMC a 4-2 lead and secure the victory and the title.
As mentioned, Georgia Military(10-4-3) will host the regional tournament this Friday and Saturday and face 4th seed Region 10 champion USC Lancaster (8-8) at 1pm in the first semifinal match while Gordon State(7-6-4), the third seed will face second seed Eastern FL(9-3-1) at 3:30pm in the second semifinal match. Friday's winners will face off at 2pm Saturday for the NJCAA South East District Championship.
