S. Georgia State Hawks Capture First Ever Conference Title
DOUGLAS, Ga. – Top seed South Georgia State Soccer had an inkling that the title game with number two seed Gordon State in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association championship Saturday afternoon was going to be difficult and it proved just that. The game went as far as it could possibly go and came down to penalty kicks, with SGSC winning a 0-0 match but scoring 3-1 during the PK's and a hard fought victory.
The conference final served as a showdown between the top two teams in which one victory by S. Georgia was the difference during their season series as the Hawks won one game and they tied the other match.
Both teams had limited scoring opportunities during the heavily defensive minded game as the Highlanders had three shots on goal and the Hawks two.
After two scoreless periods and two scoreless overtime periods the game moved to penalty kicks. The Highlanders responded quickly, scoring first on a PK by Gabriella Arellano. Devani Rodriguez responded for the Hawks with a goal, tying the score at 1.
GCAA MVP, Lissette Sanchez gave the Hawks a lead 2-1 with goal and Madison Steyer increased the lead to 3-1. The Highlanders last opportunity hit the crossbar giving the Hawks the 3-1 PK victory.
With the victory, the Hawks clinched their first ever GCAA championship.
GSC's season concludes at 10-4-2.
