BARNESVILLE - The GCAA women's soccer championship featured a rematch from last year's championship but in this scenario the roles were reversed. Gordon and Georgia Military were once again the top two teams from the regular season but Gordon earned the regular season championship and #1 seed and GMC came in at #2.
And based off their three previous games during the season, expectations were for another low scoring and great title match. After playing for most of the night in a cold drizzle the night the Lady Highlanders from Georgia State outscored the Georgia Military Bulldogs by a 2-1 margin.
Skylar Bertram put the Highlanders up 1-0 at the 26th minute. Gordon State added to that lead three minutes later on a goal by Jordan White to go up 2-0 in a first half that was spent mostly on GMC's side of the field and left the Bulldogs on their heels and playing defense. Gordon out shot GMC 8-2 during the first half and took that 2-0 lead into halftime.
Georgia Military came out much more aggressive in the second half with the Bulldogs Annie Akins cutting the Highlander lead to one (2-1) scoring at the 61 minute mark. But that was all the scoring for the night and Gordon State walked away with the 2018 GCAA / Region 17 title.
Gordon State is now 16-1 overall and finished 11-1 in GCAA/Region 17 play. They'll travel to Spartanburg, SC for the 2018 NJCAA D-1 Southeast District Tournament on Nov. 2-3.
