Lady Jets win GCAA Championship; Up next Spartanburg Methodist for the Southeast District title.
Saturday's championship game placed two nationally ranked teams battling for the GCAA title. Upstart and twenty fourth nationally ranked East Georgia State Lady Bobcats faced the national's number one ranked team in the Lady Jets of South Georgia Tech. The top ranked Lady Jets just proved to be too much in defeating the Bobcats and capturing the title 68-52.
South Georgia Tech came into the tournament as the number one seed going undefeated in conference play and the Lady Jets only loss came the first game of the season. In the first semifinal game, SGTC ended the season for Albany Tech 84-68 moving the Lady Jets to the title game. The second game, the Lady Bobcats eliminated the Lady Chargers of Georgia Highlands College 86-75 setting up the title game with both teams having more than 20 plus wins during the season.
SGTC started strong in the first quarter at one point holding a 16 point lead. The first quarter ended with the 21-9 lead. EGSC turned things around in quarter two holding the Jets to11 points while posting 20 points, cutting the lead to 3 going into half trailing a 32-29 lead.
The Lady Jets expanded their lead in third quarter taking an 8 point lead into the final quarter. SGTC did what they do best and that was to wear down their opponent by continuing to increase their lead and outscoring the Bobcats 21-13 in the fourth and Jets finished with a 68-52 championship win.
SGTC's Fanta Gassama led all scorers with 20 points, GCAA Player of the Year Alexia Dizeko added 17, Luana Leite had 11. Camryn James came off the bench contributing 13 points. Jasmyn Strobridge led the Bobcats with 17 points, D'Mya Griffin and Torrion Starks contributed 11 and 10 points respectively.
Alexia Dizeko was named the tournament MVP. Luana Leite was also named to the All Tournament team from SGTC. Zuriyah Davis and Torrion Starks from EGSC, Cheyenne Holloman from GHC and Jakhia Parker from Albany Tech were the other members selected.
Next step for the Lady Jets will be hosting Spartanburg Methodist for the Southeast District Championship this Saturday at 1pm. SMC comes into Saturday's game with a 15-7 overall record. A win and SGTC will move to 31-1 and can secure the number one seed at the NJCAA National Tournament in Lubbock TX.
