Lady Jets win GCAA/Region 17 Title; Focus turns to District
Lady Jets win GCAA Championship; Focus now set on Southeast District title.
Saturday's title marks the fifth in the past six years for the Lady Jets. SGTC travels to Spartanburg Methodist to battle for the Southeast District title this Saturday at 1pm. And if they can get past the Lady Pioneers then they can turn their full attention on the NJCAA National Tournament and Lubbock TX.
The Lady Jets received an opening round bye after running the table during conference play and finishing 17-0. That reward also allowed them once again to stay at home and host the GCAA semis and finals. Semifinal game one saw the Lady Jets take an easy 89-65 win over East Georgia State. Balanced scoring was the name of the game as four players landed in double figures. GCAA Player of the Year Shamari Tyson led SGTC with 23 points. Anna McKendree contributed 20 points and Yasriyyah Wazeerud-Din had 17 points. Niya Goudelock finished with 13 points.
Semifinal Game two saw Georgia Highlands take a relatively easy victory over C. Georgia Tech. The Lady Chargers held CGTC to a 4 point low second quarter and roll on to win 71-56.
Championship Saturday saw GHC come out on fire in the first quarter taking a 30-13 lead. The Lady Chargers extended the score and went into halftime leading 47-29. SGTC was down by as many as 22 points in the second half but managed to cut the Charger lead to 10 going into the 4th period. It was at that point the Lady Jets hit the afterburners and held GHC to five 4th quarter points and come from behind for a 69-63 win. SGTC had five players in double figures, Yasriyyah Wazeerud-Din had 14, Shamari Tyson, Femme Sikuzani and Niya Goudelock had 12 points each and Anna McKendree had 10. Tynasia Bunting led the Chargers with 26 points.
Next step for the Lady Jets is familiar territory as they will face Spartanburg Methodist for the third straight year and this time travel to Spartanburg for the Southeast District Championship. Last year the Lady Jets trounced SMC 100-51. SMC comes into Saturday's game with a 21-7 overall record. A win and the Lady Jets will move to a 30-2 record and set their sights on the national tournament.
