Oxford, GA – The Golden Knights put together perhaps their best effort of the year and stunned fourth-ranked Montgomery College (Maryland) 81-70 here Saturday to claim the District G Championship.
West Georgia Tech advances to the NJCAA National Tournament, to be hosted March 16-18 in Utica, N.Y.
The second quarter was pivotal. With the Raptors leading 20-19 after a period of play, West Georgia Tech outscored the visitors from Maryland 22-7 in the second to take a 41-27 lead to the half. The Golden Knights (8-16) led by as many as 17 in the third period and held the Raptors at bay in the fourth to claim the title. Montgomery finishes the season 22-6.
Coach Alford Williams' squad placed five in double-figures and were led by Anna Watkins' 19 points, followed by Chase Parker at 17, Faith Swint's 14, Victoria Kennedy's 12 and Jordan Davis' 10. Parker also pulled down 17 rebounds.
Last year, the Golden Nights advanced to the National Tournament and placed fourth. This year's event will be hosted by Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica. Pairings will be announced this week.
