The ABAC Fillies softball team still controls their own destiny through 16 conference games, as they will take a break from conference play this week as they host two non-conference opponents with Thomas University and CVCC on this week's slate. The Fillies team sits in sole position of second place with a record of nine wins and seven losses. Georgia Highlands and Georgia Military are tied at the top both with identical records of eleven and five.
Coming off a two game set with one of the top teams in the nation, Chipola, the Fillies hung tough but the final results went against their favor as runs poured in with the scores of 10-1 and 7-0.
ABAC looked to put that behind them as they played on the road against South Georgia this past Saturday in Douglas.
In the first game, both teams were held scoreless offensively for the first five innings of play as both pitchers were tough in the circle. The difference in the game came in the top of the sixth as the visitors sent six batters to the plate. With one out in the inning, Olivia Carter put the ball in play on the ground were one to many bobbles by the shortstop allowed her to reach first. But it didn't get any better for the shortstop on the next play as Sydney Vaughn also reached to give ABAC first and second. Savannah Gabriel walked to load the bases. Carter would then score on a steal to home plate, Kali Price would score both Vaughn and Gabriel on another hard hit ball on the ground to give ABAC three runs in the inning. Bailey Leger would record the only other hit of the frame to right field.
South Georgia crossed a run in the first and sixth inning.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Kameron Coggins struck out five, while hurlers for South GA sat down one. South GA captured the lead in the first inning. South GA scored one run when Abbi Lewis singled with two outs in the first inning.
Coggins earned the win for ABAC Fillies . She pitched seven innings, surrendering two runs, five hits, striking out five, and walking one. Lewis took the loss for South GA. She went two innings, allowing three runs, one hit, and walking one. Tess Robinson started the game for South GA. She tossed four innings, surrendering zero runs, five hits, striking out one, and walking zero.
ABAC Fillies collected seven hits. Savannah Gabriel, Hayley Dobson, and Taylor Corbett each collected multiple hits for ABAC Fillies .
Lewis went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead South GA in hits.
ABAC clinched the two game set with a shutout by another freshman pitcher, Lizzie Massingill. Massingill allowed just six hits and induced a fly out from Abbi Lewis to end the game.
The pitching was strong on both sides. Massingill struck out four, while Sarah Smithsat down zero.
ABAC Fillies captured the lead in the first inning. ABAC Fillies scored one run when Vaughn singled with two outs in the first inning.
A single by Abbi Lewis in the second inning was a positive for South GA.
Massingill earned the win in the circle. She pitched seven innings, surrendering zero runs, six hits, striking out four. Smith took the loss for South GA. She tossed seven innings, surrendering one run, on five hits.
Vaughn, Price, Leger, Trenity Coleman, and Carter each collected one hit to lead ABAC Fillies .
Chesea Lyons went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead South GA in hits.
On Sunday, ABAC reeled in their third win in a row coming off the sweep against South Georgia as they traveled to Alabama to take on CVCC.
CVCC took an early lead in the second inning. With one out in the second inning when Adrain Tew drove in one run when she doubled.
Skylar Dorough earned the win for ABAC Fillies . She went seven innings, surrendering one run, seven hits, striking out one.
ABAC Fillies had eight hits in the game. Hayley Dobson and Dorough each collected multiple hits for ABAC Fillies . Dorough and Dobson each collected two hits to lead the Fillies team.
ABAC returned to action yesterday afternoon and will have a weekend set with CVCC at Fillies Field on Saturday with games at 2 and 4.
