Team Stats
West Georgia Tech
It took 10 games, but the Golden Knights softball team broke into the win column March 10 on the road at East Georgia.
After dropping the opener 5-0, Coach Monica Mills' club bounced back with a 6-2 win in Game 2. WGTC got a two-run double in the second inning from sophomore Azariah Bell giving the Golden Knights an early 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish. Hannah Hennessy got the win. The freshman needed only 61 pitches and gave up just four hits.
On the road Saturday at South Georgia, the Golden Knights jumped out to a 5-2 lead only to see the Hawks battle back with three runs in the fifth, tying the score 5-5. The game went into extra innings.
With the tie-breaker rule in effect, each team began the inning with a runner on second. Dezirae Rhodes opened the eighth at second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bell. Lindsey Touchstone flies out to center, but it is not deep enough to score Rhodes.
Hennessy is up next and is walked, bringing up Kayelyn Lewis. With one strike, the freshman lines a hard single to left, scoring Rhodes for the go-ahead run. Hennessy retired the Hawks in order, and the Golden Knights had their second win in as many days, 6-5. WGTC dropped Game 2 by a 7-2 margin.
The Golden Knights (2-11, 2-9 GCAA) will stay on the road this Saturday with a doubleheader at Georgia Highlands before returning home Sunday for a twin bill with LaGrange College. Sunday's first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Central High School.
