Cavs open season with 4-2 victory over GMC
August 28, 2014
ALBANY – Darton State won 4-2 at
home Wednesday, in their season opener with Georgia
Military College, but it wasn’t pretty.
“I don’t think we played particularly well,”
Darton head coach Bart Sasnett said. “But at the end of the
day a win is a win, and we’ll take them any way we can get
them.”
As expected in the intensely competitive Region 17, it was a
very hotly contested, physical match. Two Georgia Military players
were issued red cards, one for fighting and one for use of poor
language toward the central official. Darton, however, did not let
it get to them. “I will say this, our composure was
excellent against those guys,” Sasnett said.
Darton sophomore Matheus Ayrolla scored one goal in each half,
while teammates Darwin Espinal and Kevyn Mcfarelane each scored a
goal in the second half.
The Bulldogs scored by quickly answering Ayrolla’s first
goal and maybe catching the Cavaliers slightly off guard. Their
second goal came from a free kick in the second half.
Sasnett said that Darton should have taken better advantage of
some opportunities.
“We left a lot of goals on the field,” he said.
“Way too many goals."
He noted that the 2014 team is showing a lot of confidence
going forward and continues to improve with combination play.
The Cavs will travel to Dunwoody, Saturday, where they will face Louisburg
College at the Georgia Perimeter College campus. They’ll
return to Albany on Sept.
6, to host Monroe College at 8 p.m.
