Sasnett gets 100th career win and regular season champs
MACON – Darton State College head men’s soccer coach Bart Sasnett picked up his 100th Cavalier win, Thursday, as his squad beat Middle Georgia College 7-4 and became the regular season champions of the GCAA conference.
But despite the lopsided score, it did not come easily. The Knights scored a quick three goals to nab a surprising 3-0 lead in only the first nine minutes of the match.
Then Darton sophomore Alejandro Garcia did what great players do.
“Off of straight will and determination, he just took over the game and we never looked back,” Sasnett said. The midfielder/forward scored Darton’s first of seven goals and roused forward Darwin Espinal from his late-season slump.
“Then it was like a feeding frenzy for Alejandro and Darwin,” Sasnett said. “They both scored hat tricks.”
The win secured Darton’s position as the No. 1 seed in the GCAA/Region 17 Championship Tournament, which opens at Darton on Nov. 2.
It was also a huge milestone for Sasnett, who is now 100-30-3 since taking over the program in 2007.
During his Darton career, Sasnett’s Cavaliers have made three NJCAA Championship appearances with two in the Final Four. The Cavaliers have dominated Region 17 since 2010, and he’s produced 9 All-Americans, 56 All-Region 17 players and six Academic All-Americans.
He and the Cavaliers finished this regular season with a 7-1 conference record and a 13-2-1 overall record.
