Darton Golfers earn GCAA team Academic Honor
NORMAN, Okla. – The Golf Coaches Association of America recently honored the Darton State Cavaliers with a 2013 GCAA Team Academic Award.
To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college or university must submit the GPAs for each player on its official squad list for the academic year. Darton was one of only four NJCAA D-1 teams to make the cut.
“We always want to emphasize academics first,” Darton golf coach Dale Dover said. “Parents send their kids here to get an education. Not all of them are going to be professional golfers - few really - so my expectations in the classroom are very high.”
The 2012-2013 Cavalier golfers spent 6 hours a week in study halls, and like all Darton State athletes, were supervised by an Early Academic Alert system that notifies the student-athlete, instructor and advisor of any issues throughout a semester of study.
DSC athletes and students also have access to free peer tutoring, math labs, writing centers and more, in both face-to-face and virtual formats, to support academic endeavors.
Dover said that he has even higher expectations for the 2013-2014 season.
“We’re proud of this, but we want to get an even better team GPA next year,” he said.
