Cavalier Nick Green wins Faulker State Invitational
Fairhope, Ala.: Darton State College sophomore Nick Green won the Faulkner State Invitational by seven shots while his Cavaliers finished fourth, Sunday.
Green, an Eastside High School graduate from Covington, finished the first round tied for first with 74 strokes, Saturday, before really turning it on and shooting a 68, or four-under, in the second round on Sunday.
“He played outstanding,” said Darton head golf coach Bill Jones. “He was nearly perfect both days.”
Jones is Darton’s first medalist this season. The program is hoping that this will be a turning point for a year that has had a few let downs so far. The Cavaliers finished the tournament in fourth place, but they were only six shots out of the lead.
“We finished horribly both days,” Jones said, “with a couple of guys finishing the five or six holes five-over. If we had finished off our rounds either day, we could have easily won the tournament.”
The Cavaliers shot 313 and 303 to total 616 strokes. Brevard won with 610, Wallace State took second with 612 and Central Alabama finished third with 613.
Conditions were cold and windy on the soggy Rock Creek Golf Club, where several inches of rain had just fallen in a series of storms that pushed over the Southeast.
The Cavaliers played the tournament without TaeHyung Kim and Taylor Martin, due to injuries and other reasons.
