The Georgia Highlands Chargers are back as GCAA Champions giving Coach JJ Merritt his first title. His teamed punched their ticket to the NJCAA national tournament with an 56-53 win over top seeded Albany Technical College.
GHC started the GCAA Final Four with a semifinal win over South Georgia 57-55 on Friday night and never led until the final minute of Saturday's title game. ATC led the Chargers by 6 at half and as many as 9 in the second half, only to see the Chargers slowly fight back and a couple of miscues by ATC resulting in easy layups in the final minute giving GHC the lead and the win Saturday.
Jay'Quan Nelson led the Chargers with 15 points, while tournament MVP Jah'kim Payne added 15 points. Chase Hill led the Titans with 17 points and Dashaun Joseph contributed 11 points.
Jah'kim Payne was named the tournament MVP. Jay'Quan Nelson was also named to the All-Tournament team from GHC. Chase Hill and Chris Dorbor from Albany Tech, Kyric Davis from South Georgia State and Deonte Williams from South Georgia Tech were the other members selected.
The Chargers turn their attention to the NJCAA national tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas as the 23rd seed and face #10 Trinity Valley.
