Tifton, Ga – Georgia Highlands College Chargers claimed their second consecutive GCAA baseball title Thursday afternoon knocking off #2 seed Gordon State 10-7. The victory gave the Chargers their third GCAA/Region 17 Championship out of the past four years.
GHC opened the tournament with a 11-1 six innings win against East Georgia State. Max Eichenberger earned the win pitching all six innings allowing one earned run yielding three hits while striking out six. Ian Fullerton had two hits including a two run homer and three RBI's.
The Chargers continued with another the run rule game on day two with a 12-4 win over Andrew College in 8 innings. Tournament MVP Ryan Martin led the hitting barrage with 4 hits including two doubles, two two-run HR's and 5 RBI's. Jackson Greer came in relief and giving two scoreless innings.
In the championship game, Gordon State took a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first inning. The Chargers answered back to take the lead scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the second. The Chargers scored four in the sixth to increase the lead to 7-2. Gordon State answered with three in the top of the seventh only to have the Chargers negate that by scoring three I the bottom half of the inning. The Highlanders plated two runs in the nineth and the Chargers closed out the game with a 10-7 win.
The bottom of the Charger order led the offensive attack with Caden Marcos going three for three with 3 RBI's. Catcher Tyler Phillips was 2 for 3.
Kaiden Krak (7-0) scattered six hits over six innings while Jackson Greer came in for the second straight day earning a save.
Ryan Martin was named tournament MVP. Other Chargers making the tournament squad are Jackson Greer, Kenskey Thomas and Tyler Phillips.
The win advances the Chargers to the NJCAA Div. I Baseball - Appalachian District Championship, where they will face the Region 7 Champion (TN) in a best 2 out of 3 series in Tennessee. with a single game played each day beginning Tuesday, May 13th. The winner of the Appalachian District receives a berth in the NJCAA College World Series in Grand Junction, CO, where ten of the best juco baseball teams in the nation, will battle to be crowned National Champion.
