GORDON STATE SWEEPS CONFERENCE SERIES OVER WEST GEORGIA TECH WITH 14-7 WIN
CARROLLTON, Georgia -- West Georgia Tech dropped a 14-7 decision to the Gordon State Tigers in baseball action Friday afternoon in Carrollton.
Gordon State (15-13, 4-0) swept the series four games to none with wins of 13-3, 16-11 and 19-11 before Friday's series finale.
The Golden Knights gave up 62 runs in the four-game series, breaking the record for most runs given up in a conference series.
The Golden Knights (5-19-1, 0-4) failed to pick up a win in the series despite scoring 32 runs on 40 hits in the four games combined.
Jacob Olson went 9 for 17 in the series with five runs scored and 5 RBI. Of Olson's nine hits, four were doubles. Olson now has 10 doubles on the year, which leads the team and is third in the conference. The freshman from Monroe improved his average to .342 and his slugging percentage to .506.
Aaron Gonzalez was 8 of 15 in the four games, which moved his average to .361. Gonzalez had 8 RBI and scored five runs.
Connor Wilson went 5 for 11 with 3 RBI over the series.
Gordon State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Friday, but WGTC answered in the bottom of the first with a run on a fielder's choice to make it a 2-1 game.
Gordon State extended its lead to 6-1 going into the bottom of the fourth. Then West Georgia Tech rallied with a pair of runs to close the gap to 6-3. An Aaron Gonzalez double scored Josh Eidson to get things going.
After the Tigers added another run in the top of the fifth, which put them ahead 7-3, WGTC scored once in the bottom of the frame to stay within three runs.
Adrian Martinez reached on an error to start the inning and Jacob Olson followed with a double to left field. After a pop out, Gonzalez hit an RBI-groundout to make it 7-4. WGTC was unable to get any closer.
With Gordon State leading 10-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Golden Knights scored twice to close the gap to four. Gonzalez led the inning with a single. One out later, Evan Skipper drove him home with the first triple of his career. Skipper later scored on a passed ball to get WGTC to within 10-6.
Gordon State's Ty Hobbs hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth, which put the game out of reach at 14-6.
Josh Eidson singled home Martinez in the ninth to round out the scoring at 14-7.
West Georgia Tech returns to action Monday afternoon at Chattahoochee Valley C.C., with a 2 p.m. (EDT) start in Phenix City, Ala
