Bulldogs topple Highlanders 5-3 to take GCAA Women's Soccer Title
MILLEDGEVILLE - The GCAA women's soccer championship featured the top two teams from the regular season and based off their previous games there were high expectations for a great title match and the teams didn't disappoint. At the end the night the Bulldogs from Georgia Military used a high powered offensive night to defeat the Gordon State Highlanders by a score of 5-3.
Over the course of the regular season both teams were as equally matched as possible. Each team separated themselves from the other schools in the GCAA as both finished the conference regular season 10-1-1. The loss and tie came from each other and based on the results of those games, the net goal differential between the two was zero.
In tonight's championship it took 34 minutes before a score as the Lady Dogs tallied the first goal of the match on a goal from league MVP Adisa Nwawel to put GMC up 1-0. Gordon answered at the 43 minute mark on a goal by Nicole Reynoso to tie the match at 1-1 just before halftime. Each team took 11 shots during the half.
The barrage of shots continued as the Dogs scored two more goals, again by Adisa Nwawel(61:44) and one by Nicolina Boza(63:15) two minutes later to take a 3-1 lead.
Highlander's Jillian Lander cut the GMC lead to one scoring with 15 minutes left, with the assist from Skylar Bertram her second assist of the night 3-2.
GMC would however answer every charge that Gordon gave and the next one came on Adisa Nwawel's goal, her third of the night. The hat trick came at the 79 minute mark and once again pushed the lead back to 2 with the score 4-2. An undisciplined play by a GMC defender in the box gave the Highlanders a penalty kick opportunity and Jordynne Godsey took full advantage to score cutting the lead to 4-3.
The Lady Dogs didn't panic by returning the favor and scored only a minute and a half later for a needed insurance goal with nine minutes left and a final score of 5-3 . The Bulldogs outshot Gordon in the second half 13-10 and 24-21 over the course of the match.
GMC is now 14-2-1 overall and finished 10-1-1 in GCAA/Region 17 play. They'll travel to Melbourne, Fla., for the 2017 NJCAA D-1 Women's Soccer Championship on Nov. 13-18.
