Bergeron Lifts Filles in overtime over Gordon State
BARNESVILLE — ABAC suffered its first lost its first regular season game a week ago at the hands of the conference's most elite team, Darton State. ABAC could only find the net once. Myesha Robinson scored the only goal of the game for the Fillies, but the team fought hard the entire game and took away some valuable things from that game, which was we have to keep improving and continue to work.
With their lone loss behind them, they moved forward to their next road game, against Gordon State this past Fridaynight. This time it was that one goal that propelled them to their fifth regular season win.
ABAC dominated the first half as Gordon didn't have one shot. Offensively, the Fillies seemed to be tuned in, but neither team capitalized on their opportunities in the first half as the score was knotted at 0-0.
ABAC outshot the home team 7-0 in the first half, and 6-5 in the second.
The beginning of the second half was a bit shaky for ABAC, Gordon came out fighting in the second half but we pulled together as a team and the pressure flipped midway through the second half. ABAC kept crossing the ball to try to push a goal in, but once again both teams came up empty in regulation.
Overtime, however, the visiting Fillies managed to stay patient, as they would get the reward from all our hard work. It took an extra period. But Blakeley Bergeron finally put one in the back of the net just a short time into the overtime period. Katy Hunt set her up nicely for the goal, and she recorded the assist.
Bergeron has now recorded a goal in all but one game for the Fillies, and has five goals on the year.
Bergeron said after the win, "The win tonight was crucial in securing the second seed spot in the conference so we are on opposite sides of the bracket for playoffs against Darton. If we keep working hard, I feel we will be more prepared and have a chance when facing them again. Darton is a great team, but now we know how they play and how intense we need to be in order to have a shot at the conference title."
ABAC (5-1, 4-1) continued their road trip last night against Georgia Military College. In their last game against GMC, ABAC won by the score of 4-1 with two goals by Blakeley Bergeron, and one goal apiece by Starr Robertson, and Breanna Gomez. The Fillies will return home October 2nd against Gordon College.
