WGTC host Mt. Zion rec dept girls team
Members of the Mt. Zion Recreation Department's 14-under girl's basketball team were special guests of the West Georgia Tech women's basketball team at WGTC's home game against Southern Crescent held on Monday, January 11.
The young ladies from Mt. Zion cheered on as West Georgia Tech defeated Southern Crescent 89-44 to move to 2-0 in GCAA/Region 17 conference play.
Following the game, all 15 members of the West Georgia Tech roster joined the Mt. Zion squad in a classroom setting for about thirty minutes. WGTC players answered questions from the Mt. Zion girls and shared advice on how to get to the next level both on the court and in the classroom.
"Those girls (WGTC players) will never, ever, ever know how much that meant to the girls on my team," Mt. Zion coach Charles Jetmore said. "They were talking about it for days, about how much fun they had and how nice the West Georgia Tech players were to them. I can't thank West Georgia Technical College, coach Kenny Edwards and the West Georgia Tech women's basketball team enough for what they did."
West Georgia Tech women's basketball head coach Kenny Edwards said that the experience was mutually beneficial to his squad.
"We make it a priority to spend as much time out in the community as we can, whether it be through community service projects or attending after school programs and other events," Edwards said. "It is especially enlightening when we can bring young people to our games and fellowship with them afterwards. Our girls love doing it, because they have been in the shoes of those other girls. They understand what it takes to work hard in the classroom and on the court in order to become a player at the next level or to be successful in whatever you do."
West Georgia Tech welcomes all groups and organizations, including recreation basketball teams, to attend its games and spend time with the players afterwards.
