Lady Titans take first conference win of the season
Macon – The Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) women's basketball team (8-3) earned their first Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) conference victory of the season Thursday night, as they defeated the South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets, 77-76.
Looking to remain undefeated at home, the Lady Titans jumped ahead early with a long range three pointer from sophomore Lorrie Cruse to start the game. Dominant throughout the first half, the Lady Titans went on a 14-5 run at the end of the second quarter to lead South Georgia Tech, 33-26, at halftime.
Maintaining the game's momentum after the half, the Lady Titans began the third quarter on a 9-0 run. Responding to the pressure of the Lady Titans, the Lady Jets were able to cut into the deficit with the outside shooting of Cierra Bond (21 points) and Holly Brown (12 points). The tandem went 4-of-8 from long range in the second half.
Becoming a battle at the free throw line within the last minute of the game, the Lady Titans were able to close out at the line while the Lady Jets were unable to connect.
Playing in only 19 minutes of the game, sophomore Aleisha Merriweather led the Lady Titans to victory with 19 points, four rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Freshman La'Shayla Pittman added 11 points, seven assists, and four steals. Sophomores Lyric Jordan and Shambria Smith both scored 10 points in the competition, with Jordan adding seven rebounds, one assist, one blocked shot, and one steal, and Smith tallying two rebounds and two steals.
The Lady Titans are back in action Monday, December 7 at 5:00 p.m., when they travel to Denmark, SC to face Denmark Technical College.
