Shanea Armbrister Inks With Lady Bulldogs
ATHENS, Ga. --- Shanea (pronounced Shuh-nay) Armbrister, who earned junior college All-America honors at Darton College in Albany, Ga., last season, signed a national letter-of-intent on Thursday to continue her collegiate career at the University of Georgia next season.
"Shanae can help us in a number of ways," head coach Andy Landers said. "She gives us height, length and good basketball senses. She's a terrific scorer and shooter with great range but she can also finish at the rim. She can play multiple positions, either wing and has the advantage of two years of maturity and experience in a successful program at Darton."
Armbrister, a 6-2 guard-forward, was named third-team All-America by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) after averaging 18.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game for Darton's Lady Cavaliers in 2013-14. Nationally, she ranked No. 23 in scoring average and No. 9 in free throw percentage (84.4). Armbrister scored in double figures in 29 of 32 games, with 17 20-point games, 10 double-doubles and a triple-double of 21 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists against Central Georgia Tech. She poured in a season-high 31 points against Southern Crescent Tech and collected a season-best 14 rebounds versus Georgia Perimeter.
"The most special and unique part of Shanea's game is that she's 6-2 and truly plays like a guard," Darton head coach Lea Henry said. "She can handle the basketball as well as our point guard. I think Shanea has really improved her game over the past year. Coming out of high school, it was all about her shooting the three. She's worked very hard and is now a much better passer, both in the half court and open floor. She still shoots the three extremely well, but she now has the ability to go around people and pull up for that mid-range jumper or get to the basket. Shanea has just been a joy to have on our basketball team. As good of a player as she is, she's an even better person."
Darton compiled a 23-9 record and a 14-6 mark in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference play. Armbrister was named GCAA Freshman of the Year and first-team All-Conference as a freshman.
Armbrister is a native of Nassau, Bahamas, who played at Calvary Christian Academy and South Broward High School in South Florida., before attending Darton. She was ranked as the No. 61 overall and No. 9 wing prospect in the nation by ESPN Hoopgurlz as a senior.
Armbrister is the second signee for the Lady Bulldogs during the NCAA early signing period. On Wednesday, Amber Skidgel, a 6-0, guard from Archer High School, inked a letter-of-intent with Georgia.
