REGION CHAMPS! NO. 6 WEST GEORGIA TECH WINS GCAA D-III
WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 82-23 VICTORY OVER
SOUTHERN CRESCENT
OXFORD, Georgia – No. 6 West Georgia Tech won its
second-consecutive Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association –
Region 17 Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament
Championship with an 82-23 victory over Southern Crescent Technical
College in the tournament championship game on Sunday.
The Golden Knights earned a spot in the District G play-in
game next Saturday - on the road at Prince George’s
Community College in Largo, Md., where they will be playing for a
berth in the eight-team NJCAA D-III Women’s Basketball
National Championship Tournament held in Bethlehem, Penn.
Prince George’s won the Region 20 championship with a
57-44 win over Westmoreland County Community College on Sunday
afternoon.
The Golden Knights dominated from start to finish on Sunday,
leading 55-15 at halftime. WGTC shot 41 percent from the field and
held Southern Crescent to just 18-percent shooting.
WGTC – the top rebounding team in the country, dominated
the boards with a 62-29 advantage.
Sydnee Clark came off the bench to lead all scorers with 19
points on 9-of-19 shooting. Angerika Colbert followed with a
16-point effort on 6-of-7 shooting.
Last year West Georgia Tech made the tournament for the first
time and finished in seventh place.
This year’s Golden Knights have won six games in row and 9
of its last 10, and are 19-8 overall with six wins against NJCAA
D-I opponents.
Although certainly at this point in the year you want to take
it one game at a time, it’s hard not to consider that West
Georgia Tech is just four wins shy of a national championship. The
Golden Knights will have to win the District play-in next
Saturday and then win three games over three days in the
National Tournament to win the school’s first national
championship.
West Georgia Tech took one step towards that goal with
Sunday’s win. Now, it’s on to Maryland.
