Lady Jets claim GCAA championship in a thriller
In what one would hope for in a championship game, this one didn't disappoint. Georgia Highlands had one last chance to steal a win over top seed South Georgia Tech and advance to the NJCAA District Tournament. Down by one point with 12.5 seconds left the Lady Chargers had enough time but a stingy South Georgia Tech defense didn't allow the Lady Chargers a opportunity to get a shot off and sealed the victory with a 59-58 victory.
The first half produced five lead changes and at one point South Georgia Tech pushed that lead to 20-12. The Lady Chargers closed that lead to one point as both teams went into intermission with South Georgia Tech leading 29-28
The second half action was back and forth and a strong 3-point shooting performance by Amber Curtis gave Georgia Highlands that last second chance. Curtis and Aujana Dawkins led GHC with 16 points, while Shakierya McClendon scored 13.
Top seeded South Georgia Tech entered the championship game with a 28-4 record with their lone conference loss coming at the hands of Georgia Highlands a couple of weeks ago. GCAA Player of the Year Shameekia Muray led all scorers with 17 points, while Nikkei Blackburn and Shaquita contributed 12 points apiece.
With the win the Lady Jets secured a trip to the NJCAA national tournament in two weeks to Salina, Kansas. Before the national tournament the Lady Jets travel to Denmark Tech in South Carolina to determine the district champion. The winner will get a seeded spot and the loser will receive an at-large bid.
