WGTC women drop Southern Union 61-37
LAGRANGE, Georgia – The West Georgia Tech Golden Knights women’s basketball team notched its seventh victory over a Division 1 junior college opponent with a 61-37 home victory over Southern Union State Community College on Mondaynight in LaGrange.
West Georgia Tech swept the season series after winning the earlier matchup in Wadley, 46-45.
“I’m proud of this team and I’m very happy overall with the way they responded playing two big games less than twenty-four hours from each other,” said WGTC head coach Kenny Edwards. “We made a point tonight to rotate our personnel groupings early and often, to keep our legs fresh. We didn’t press quite as much tonight either. But we established a lead early and didn’t let them back in the game, and that was important for us to do tonight. I’ve very proud of our effort winning back-to-back games. That’s something we’ll have to do if we want to advance in the postseason and for the first time this year I believe we played well and with consistent effort on consecutive nights.”
The Golden Knights used a 17-2 run midway through the first half to stretch an 11-10 lead to 28-12. SUCC got to within eight in the final seconds before a Jhalyn Feaster jumper at the buzzer gave the Knights a 32-22 lead at the half.
WGTC held Southern Union to just 32-percent shooting from the field.
West Georgia Tech returns to the court on Friday hosting Snead State (Ala.), at Oak Mountain Academy in Carrollton. Tip-time is 5:30 p.m., with the men’s game to follow thirty minutes after the women’s game.
