Lady Cavaliers win GCAA Region 17 Championship
Darton State College beat Chattahoochee Technical College, 71-60, to win the NJCAA Region 17 Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament, Saturday.
It was the Lady Cavaliers’ first championship since 2001, and it took head coach Lea Henry only two seasons to bring the program into the championship spotlight.
The GCAA recognized Henry as Coach of the Year. The conference also honored sophomore Michelle Mitchell as Player of the Year and Region 17 Tournament MVP. Sophomore Chanteniece Fann earned All-Region 17, 2nd Team honors and made the All-Tournament team.
Now Darton, ranked No. 11 in the latest NJCAA poll, will host Denmark Technical College (S.C.) in the District J Championship at 6 p.m., Friday, in the Cavalier Arena in Albany. The victor will be among 16 teams to compete for the national title in Salina, Kan., March 18-23.
The Lady Cavaliers will enter the game Friday with a perfect 17-0 at-home record. They are 29-3 overall and finished a GCAA conference record of 18-2.
