West Georgia Tech Hires Monica Mills To Lead Softball Program
August 13, 2015
West Georgia Tech has hired former University of West Georgia catcher Monica Mills to lead its softball program.
Mills replaces Stephanie Herrera and becomes the second head coach in program history.
The Calhoun, Ga. native played collegiately at the University of West Georgia, where she started as a catcher in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. Injuries plagued her junior and senior years.
Mills played in 104 games with 96 starts for the Wolves and drove in 34 runs. Her most games played came in her freshman year, where she started and played in all 47 games for UWG, hitting two home runs and driving in 15 runs. She had four home runs and a grand slam in her career at West Georgia.
Mills prepped at Gordon Central High School in Calhoun.
The former catcher plans to instill a "small-ball" approach in her first head-coaching job.
"We will put emphasis on playing what you would call small ball," Mills said. "We want to be very aggressive on the bases and manufacture runs. Home runs are great but in this day and age you have to be able to hit line drives and score runs in several different ways."
Mills started her role back in early July.
"I'm very excited and I'm grateful to the administration at West Georgia Tech for giving me this opportunity. I can guarantee that we will compete hard every day and that we will produce an exciting brand of softball for our fans," Mills said.
