WGTC softball earns split with 18th ranked Spartanburg Methodist
DOUGLASVILLE, Georgia – West Georgia Tech softball split with No. 18 Spartanburg Methodist (S.C.) University Sundayafternoon in Douglasville, dropping the first game 6-2 before taking the nightcap 5-4.
West Georgia Tech is 1-4 overall on the season, having played a brutal early schedule in which four of its first five opponents were nationally ranked.
Game 1: Spartanburg Methodist 6, WGTC 2
The Golden Knights gave up four runs in the fourth inning to fall behind 5-1 in game one against No. 18 Spartanburg Methodist and that proved to be the difference in the 6-2 loss.
Brittany Portwood picked up the loss on the mound despite allowing just one earned run on four hits over seven innings. She struck out four and walked five.
The Golden Knights stranded eight base runners.
West Georgia Tech scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to earn its first victory of the season, 5-4 over No. 18 Spartanburg Methodist in game two of the doubleheader.
Keisha Stone started the game for the Knights and allowed just two runs over five innings.
“Our pitching rotation of Keisha Stone and Brittany Portwood was phenomenal this weekend,” Herrera said. “I’m proud of Brittany Lundgren who came on and got the save for us. Just a great effort all-around by our pitching staff.
Harlee Mills led WGTC offensively (2-for-3 with an RBI).
