Gordon Rolls to Softball Title
Apr-30-2012
Gordon College came into the softball tournament as the third seeded team, but that seeding was very misleading to the casual observer. In fact, the Lady Highlanders finished only one game behind Darton during the regular season conference schedule and because of a tie breaker scenario with GPC landed that middle seed.
Gordon advanced through the winners bracket with two victories on Friday. A 5-4 win over ABAC and a 6-3 victory over GPC pushed Gordon into Saturday's winning bracket game against number one seed Darton. With a close 4-3 victory over Darton on Saturday, Gordon was in a great position on Sunday having to win only one game Sunday. Darton forced an (If) championship game defeating Gordon by a score of 7-1.
Turned out Gordon's motivation for victory came from all places a young Highlander supporter. The young boy, who had followed the softball team all year asked Coach Ally Hatterman between games if she would call his mother to see if she would let him go to Utah and the National tournament if they won. He then gave Coach Hatterman his home phone number. Coach Hatterman showed this to her players and basically told them that they didn't want to let this young boy down. That motivated the players to a 7-5 victory and the 2012 GCAA softball championship
