Birmingham, Ala. -
Darton State College won seven individual events and took a trio of second-place finishes at the Birmingham Southern College CrossPlex, Friday.
Leading the Lady Cavaliers, sophomore Ashley Delgado won the 100 and 200 meter freestyle, and freshman Katie Miller won the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Delgado finished the 100 in 57:44, and the 200 in 2:03.28. Miller finished the 100 breast in 1:13.16, and the 200 in 2:41.40.
David Diaz continued to lead the Darton men, and took 1st-place finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke (56.68 and 2:06.64, respectively) and the 200 IM (1:59.03).
"You can tell all of David's hard work is paying off," Darton head swimming coach Major Robinson said. "He stayed a little longer over the Christmas break to train, and we are seeing the results. He's inching closer to the other guys (leading the NJCAA), and we'll pick them off at nationals."
Darton's Matt Martin's performance was also notable, as the sophomore finished second in 100 and 200 backstroke, and the 500 freestyle. "Birmingham was the start of the meat of our season," Robinson said. "We have tough meets three weekends in a row as we work our way to the national championships."
Darton will travel to defending NCAA D3 National Champions, Emory College, Saturday, and to Georgia Tech the following weekend. The Cavaliers will host the 2015 Region 14 Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championship on Feb. 14 in the Darton State College Natatorium.
