DSC wins 12th consecutive title; Brown wins individual title
TIFTON – Darton State College won its 12th consecutive Region 17 Golf Championship by 38 strokes, today, at the Golf Club of South Georgia in Tifton.
Parks Brown, a freshman from Gainesville, shot an even par today to grasp his first collegiate tournament victory and the Region 17 Individual Champion title.
“I just got off to a slow start and then had two solid rounds,” he said. “I made some good putts and hit the ball pretty well and… everything just kind of came together.”
Brown finished 4-over the first day but finished rounds two and three even.
His score combined with those of teammates Madison Turner, Nick Green and Tae Kim (72, 73, 75, respectively) today gave Darton a total of 292 strokes. The Cavs struggled the first day, shooting 305, but played solid afterward and finished with a 3-round total of 892. They were 38 strokes better than runners-up ABAC, who hosted the tournament.
“They really picked it up the last two days,” Darton head golf coach Bill Jones said of the Cavaliers. “Nick, Madison and Parks – they were solid all day today. 292 was a great team score.”
The win left Jones with his second consecutive Region 17 Golf Coach of the Year award. Brown, Green and Tuner earned All Region 17 honors.
“If we keep this trend going and get better every round, and if we start a little better next week, we’ll be in real good shape,” Jones said.
The Cavaliers will play in the NJCAA District 4 Championship in Pendleton, S.C., April 15-16. The top seven teams will qualify for the NJCAA Championship in Lubbock, Tex.
