Darton State Golf Director Dale Dover to enter the hall of fame
This May, at the 2013 NJCAA D-1 National Golf Championship in Lubbock, Tex., Darton State College Golf Director Dale Dover will become an official member of the NJCAA Golf Coaches Hall of Fame.
The news was announced at a press conference at Darton State College today. Dover will be the first coach to enter the Hall of Fame for his work at Darton.
During his career with the Cavaliers, Dover had 51 tournament victories, won three NJCAA D-2 National Championships, won 12-straight Region 17 Championships, and most recently, won a NJCAA D-1 District Championship. He has coached 23 All Americans, two national championship medalists and two national championship runners up. He is a three-time national coach of the year.
“It’s still all about the players,” he said. “I never hit a shot or made a put.”
Jamie Howell, who coaches golf at Darton’s NJCAA D-1 rival program, Brevard Community College, and wrote a nomination letter on Dover’s behalf, said Dover’s best interest has always been in his student-athletes.
“Coach Dover always arrived at every tournament ready to compete. His players were gentlemen and he never asked for any preferential treatment or favors,” Howell said. “When it comes to Hall of Fame criteria for nomination and potential election, Dale Dover earned every inch of the long swath he paved at Darton State College.”
Current Darton head golf coach Bill Jones was the first to announce Dover’s inauguration today. Jones played golf at Darton and as a student-athlete under Dover in 2007 became the Darton College Student-Athlete of the Year after finishing a golf season as a NJCAA 1st Team All-American, NJCAA Low Medalist, Arnold Palmer Award recipient and Academic All-American.
“I was confident that he’s be voted in right away,” Jones said. “His record speaks for itself, and he has meant so much to Darton, to the Southwest Georgia Community and to all of the young men and their families that he has worked with.”
