The Georgia Highlands Chargers captured the GCAA Region 17 Basketball Championship as Coach Phil Gaffney and his teamed again punched their ticket back to the NJCAA national tournament with a 99-80 over South Georgia Tech.
GHC has utilized a run until the other team can't run game plan and it has resulted in the Chargers winning three straight region titles in the Georgia College Athletic Association. To this point the Chargers (32-1) have lost a grand total of 2 games in the past 2 seasons
Georgia Highlands started the GCAA Final Four with a semifinal win over South Georgia State 101-91 on Friday night and continued that high octane performance in the championship game leading the South Georgia Technical College Jets by 16 at half and coasting to a 99-80 win Saturday.
Kyvon Davenport led the Chargers with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Tournament MVP, Ty'Lik Evans contributed 19 points while Antonio Wade and Kamar McKnight each scored 14 points. South Georgia Tech (13-20) was led by Andre Kennedy's 22 points and Marquel Wiggins's 18 points.
"When just played very, very well. When we are on top of our game and being aggressive and attacking the basket we're very difficult to beat," Gaffney said. "Our guys are so unselfish, played hard tonight. When they do that we're probably gonna win."
"We just came out and did what we are supposed to do, kept our heads straight and everything came along for us," Evans said of the Chargers' championship win.
The Chargers will leave next Monday for Hutchinson, Kansas with the number three seed for the NJCAA tournament. Georgia Highlands has made it into the quarterfinals the past two seasons, with the team finishing in fourth place in 2015.
This year the hope is to return home with a national title ring.
