Gordon State College takes road victory over Golden Knights
CARROLLTON, Georgia -- Gordon State College traveled to DIII West Georgia Tech a came away with a 68-47 road win in GCAA Men's basketball action Wednesday night.
With the win Gordon improved to 5-12 and 2-3 while WGTC fell to 7-11 overall and 2-0 in conference action. Gordon State utilized a much bigger and taller squad than West Georgia Tech, to out rebound the Knights by a 55-27 margin with 27 of the 55 rebounds on the offensive board as to just 4 from WGTC.
Neither team had great nights offensively as Gordon shot 34.8 percent from the field, but had 22 more opportunities than WGTC (24 of 69). Another major factor in the Highlanders victory was that Gordon State connected on nine three-pointers (9 of 27).
Raynere Thorton dominated the inside for Gordon State with 14 points and 16 rebounds while Myles Howard led the Highlanders in the scoring department with 16 points. Adrian Tolbert led West Georgia Tech with 15 points on 5 of 12 shooting in the loss.
West Georgia Tech and Gordon went back and forth in the game's early minutes. The Golden Knights led 14-13 at the 9:31 mark, and stayed within striking distance the remainder of the half. Gordon State's largest lead in the first half was at 28-22 with 2:28 on the clock.
WGTC trailed 30-27 at halftime.
Gordon State pushed its lead to nine, 36-27, in the first three minutes of the second half. WGTC scored the next five points to get within four, 36-32, with 14:52 remaining.
Gordon State then went on a 21-9 run over the next seven minutes to put the game out of reach.
