Oxford- Emory captures DIII men's title
There is a reason you play two 20 minute periods of a basketball game. Oxford-Emory went into halftime with a commanding 13 point lead only to hold off the Golden Knights of West Georgia Tech with some clutch free throws in the last minute of the game to win the GCAA DIII men's championship 60-53.
The first ten minutes were tight with the Eagles slowing down the Golden Knights running game to a half court contest. Oxford increased their lead to 21-14 at the seven minute mark while going on a 12-2 run over a 4 minute span. The Eagles pushed that lead to 33-20 into intermission.
Oxford's lead was trimmed down from 19 to 12 giving the Knights some much needed momentum. The lead was cut to 5 with 8:20 left, 44-39. But time, or the lack of it and too much effort exerted to get back into the game were too much to overcome. The Eagles win 60-53.
With the win the Eagles secured a trip to the NJCAA district tournament next Friday and Saturday at Region 10 champion Caldwell. The Eagles will take on Caldwell CC &TI Friday at 5pm.
