ABAC topples Darton 3-1 in series opener
A two-run second inning would prove to be all the ABAC Stallions would need to hold off Darton State College 3-1 Tuesday night in Tifton.
Darton's starting pitcher Sam Goberdahn would find himself in rare trouble in the second when Cain Peterson led off the inning with a line drive that was mishandled by the Cavalier left fielder. After Goberdahn issued two more walks, Nick Higginbotham (2/3 2B 3 RBI's) delivered a two out, two RBI single to score Peterson and Kole Adams.
Darton's offense threatened in the third inning when Kendall Herron singled to left field to lead off the inning against ABAC starter Matthew Meeks. Two Stallions errors would lead to one earned run, but Meeks managed to strike out the side to escape trouble. The Cavaliers offense would strand twelve runners in the game.
Meeks (7-4) earned the win on the mound by tossing six innings allowing four hits, one unearned run, striking out eight batters. Tristain Daugherty gave the Stallions 2.1 innings of one-hit relief, and Austin Guest earned his eighth save of the season while retiring the final Darton batter.
Sam Goberdahn (5-1) suffers his first loss of the season as he threw a complete game allowing five hits, one earned run, and notching five strikeouts.
