South Georgia State holds on to win season opener against West Georgia Tech, 4-3
CARROLLTON, Georgia -- The South Georgia State Hawks traveled to West Georgia Tech for Tuesday's series opener and held off a comeback by the Golden Knights taking the opener 4-3 in Carrollton.
South Georgia State (19-13, 4-1) held a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the eighth before allowing a pair of runs to make it a 4-3 ballgame. WGTC stranded the potential tying run at second base and went down quietly in the ninth.
South Georgia State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run-scoring single with one out in the second inning.
West Georgia Tech (5-21, 0-5) tied the game in the bottom of the third on an Aaron Gonzalez two-out single with the bases loaded. WGTC's Jacob Olson was called out at home trying to score from second base on a bang-bang play, so we went to the fourth knotted up at 1-1.
South Georgia State broke the tie with a pair of runs in the fifth, which gave the Hawks a 3-1 lead. Another South Georgia run in the seventh proved to be the difference in the game, giving the Hawks a 4-1 lead.
