WGTC releases 2014 baseball schedule
CARROLLTON, Georgia – West Georgia Tech baseball coach Todd Pratt has announced his squad’s 2014 schedule, with 55 games on the docket.
The season will open on February 1 at home against Vincennes University, a tradition-rich Division II junior college team from Indiana.
In all, West Georgia Tech will play 19 non-conference games before opening its conference slate on March 4 against Andrew College.
Those non-conference tilts include some of the best competition in neighboring states Alabama and Tennessee.
The Golden Knights will play Snead State (Ala.), Chattanooga State (Tenn.), Chattahoochee Valley (Ala.) C.C., Southern Union (Ala.) as well as the junior varsity squad from LaGrange College (Ga.).
West Georgia Tech will play 36 conference games in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association, up from 32 a year ago as the conference welcomes newcomer Georgia Highlands to the fold.
WGTC and Georgia Highlands will play each other in the final conference series of the season.
“We are very excited about our 2014 schedule,” Pratt said. “We are, in my opinion, playing some of the elite programs from Alabama and Tennessee. We play in one of the toughest conferences in the nation, so a tough non-conference schedule is needed to get our guys ready for the grind.”
Pratt said that he is equally excited about the incoming crop of talent which will blend with a solid returning nucleus to make up the 2013-14 squad.
“We have a lot of talent coming back from last year and they will provide leadership for us,” he said. “I anticipate a few transfers that we are still waiting to get cleared that will join our incoming freshmen to provide some real competition for starting jobs. I’m very pleased with the overall talent of next year’s team.”
The Golden Knights will play a fall schedule as well, stretching from September 14 through October 12.
