Haygood catches Gold Glove award
ALBANY – Darton State College sophomore Trey Haygood earned an ABCA/Rawlings D1 Gold Glove Award for his work as an outfielder for the Cavaliers, the NJCAA announced today.
“I was ecstatic,” Haygood said following the announcement. “I didn’t even know I was being considered.”
Haygood, who came to Darton from Valdosta, had a 1.000 fielding percentage and 107 putouts while flawlessly making zero errors this season alone.
Haygood said his success came from his work with the Darton State coaching staff, his father’s support and “a lot of hard work in the off-season.”
“It came from not taking anything for granted, and doing every drill to the best of my ability,” he said. “There was a lot of talent both years I was at Darton. You couldn’t slack off, ever, because your spot would be taken. It forces you to work harder.”
Haygood’s father spent many a night driving back to Valdosta after home games at the Darton campus in Albany, and his involvement played a big role in Haygood’s success as well.
“My dad gave me a lot of support,” Haygood said. “He’s always supported me throughout everything.”
Haygood has several schools interested in bringing him in as a transfer, but he has not made a decision yet. He’s waiting until tomorrow’s draft closes, he said.
