Middle Georgia rallies in the eighth to win GCAA title, Cavaliers finish runners up
Albany, Ga. - The Middle Georgia Warriors defeated the Darton
Cavaliers for the second time in as many days to win the
GCAA/Region 17 Championship on Saturday at Darton State
College.
After trailing most of the game, the Warriors put up three runs in
the top of the 8th to win 5-4 on Saturday. The Cavaliers
were up 4-2 going into the eighth, but the Warriors went into a
three- run rally that began with Cavalier starter Chris Long and
ended with relief pitcher Andrew Crumbley.
Long got into trouble after he walked Cody Langford and then gave up a double to Blake Shouse, scoring Langford. Crumbley came in from the bullpen with a runner on second and gave up a double to batter Andrew Kelly on his first pitch, advancing Shouse to third. The Warriors kept at it as Trae Wilson hit a hard ground ball to left field, scoring Shouse for the tying run.
An infield error allowed Kelly to score the winning run.
Middle Georgia closer Justin Flores didn’t give up a hit and picked up the win for the Warriors.
Darton’s Cody Wofford sparked the Cavalier offense early. He homered in the first inning, singled in the seventh and stole bases twice. Brandon Sharpe went 2-for-3 with a double, three stolen bases and a run scored. And Davis Knapp doubled and scored once in the Darton loss.
The Warriors will play as the GCAA #1 seed for the District Championship beginning May 16 in Morristown, TN for a spot in the NJCAA World Series.
