Middle Georgia came into today's championship game already knowing they would be playing this weekend in the East Central District baseball tournament. But with the GCAA tournament being pushed back a day due to Sunday's rain day, the Warrior's also wanted to take care of business on multiple levels. First, they wanted to secure the number one seed. Second, they didn't want to have to play two games against Gordon and go deep into their pitching staff. They accomplished both goals but not without a fight from Gordon.
Middle Georgia took a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the 9th and with 2 outs and two strikes it looked like everything was going to unravel. Two unusal hops on ground balls led to the Highlanders scoring three runs and the potential winning run was thrown out at the plate to send the game into extra innings.
The Warriors scored a run in the top of the 10th inning and the put the Gordon squad down in order in the bottom half of the inning to capture the GCAA Championship by a 7-6 score. Both Gordon and Middle Georgia advance to this weekend's district tournament. Gordon will face Walters State and Middle Georgia will play Columbia State.
