GCAA Hall of Fame Announces 2020 Inaugural Inductees
DEMOREST, Ga. – In conjunction with its 40th anniversary of athletic participation, the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association announced its inaugural Hall of Fame class on Wednesday, February 26. College of Coastal Georgia former basketball head coach and Director of Athletics Gerald Cox, and former South Georgia State's men's baseball head coach Scott Simms were selected as the inaugural inductees.
Cox will be inducted into the newly created Hall of Fame this Saturday and Simms later this spring.
"This inaugural class is the epitome of what has made and continues to make the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association something really special," said GCAA commissioner David Elder. "There is just something about our student-athletes who have taken advantage of opportunities given to them and a group of coaches and administrators who have dedicated their life to help making a difference in the lives of young men and women.
The inaugural class and future classes are divided into three categories: Student-Athletes, Coaches, and Administrators.
Coach Cox had an exceptionally distinguished career as a basketball coach and athletic administrator in a career that spanned six decades. Over that time, he earned 632 wins as a men's basketball head coach. These wins occurred over 42 years as head coach; 10 years at Truett-McConnell College and 32 years at Brunswick Junior College/College of Coastal Georgia. Coach Cox coached numerous NJCAA All-Americans and players who would eventually move on to play at four year colleges including one NBA first round pick.
Over his career, Coach Simms had 589 wins, 17 players were drafted by MLB and ended that successful career by taking his team to the NJCAA JUCO World Series and earning a #6 national ranking. In 2012, Coach Sims was inducted into the NJCAA Baseball Hall of Fame and Georgia Dugout Hall of Fame. Coach Sims dedicated his talents and time to South Georgia College for 21 years as baseball coach and senior faculty member. He served as the GCAA Baseball Chair for many years as well as Chairman of the Standard and Ethics Committee.
